MetaMask has launched a new feature that integrates access to tokenized U.S. stocks, ETFs, and commodities. The integration, in partnership with Ondo Finance’s Global Markets platform, allows users to buy, hold, and trade over 200 tokenized U.S. securities directly in the MetaMask mobile app. This move expands the wallet’s offerings and highlights the growing trend of real-world asset tokenization.
MetaMask has introduced more than 200 tokenized U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) through Ondo Finance’s Global Markets platform. This includes shares of major companies like Tesla, Apple, and Nvidia, as well as ETFs that track assets such as gold, silver, and the Nasdaq. Users can now buy and trade these tokenized assets directly in the MetaMask app, without needing a traditional brokerage account.
Eligible users in non-U.S. jurisdictions can access this feature, giving them the ability to acquire tokens with USDC on the Ethereum mainnet. These tokens track the market value of the underlying assets, ensuring users can gain exposure to traditional markets in a more decentralized way. The trading system operates 24 hours a day, five days a week, ensuring continuous access to these tokenized assets.
MetaMask’s integration marks one of the first instances of tokenized U.S. equities and ETFs being made available through a self-custodial wallet. This approach bypasses traditional brokerage systems, which often involve intermediaries and rigid trading windows. Joe Lubin, CEO of Consensys, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating that it demonstrates a better model for financial transactions.
While MetaMask users can trade tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs, these assets are restricted in countries like the U.S., UK, and Canada. The tokens do not grant ownership rights to the underlying assets and are not registered under U.S. securities laws. Despite these limitations, the move reflects a shift in market infrastructure towards tokenization and more accessible financial services.
The tokenization of real-world assets has become a rapidly growing market, with a valuation exceeding $22 billion globally. Ark Invest, led by Cathie Wood, predicts that this market could surpass $11 trillion by 2030. As crypto firms continue to innovate, the lines between traditional finance and blockchain-based markets are increasingly being blurred.
MetaMask’s integration of tokenized U.S. stocks, ETFs, and commodities is just one example of how the industry is evolving. This integration demonstrates the growing potential of blockchain technology to reshape how users access traditional financial products, while providing a more decentralized alternative to conventional trading systems.
