Ransom notes demand up to $6M in Bitcoin in the Nancy Guthrie case as the FBI releases footage and confirms wallet activity.

A reported Bitcoin ransom demand has surfaced in the case of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television anchor Savannah Guthrie.

Media outlets received messages demanding millions of dollars in cryptocurrency for her safe return. Law enforcement agencies continue active investigations as new details emerge.

Ransom Notes Demand Up to $6 Million in Bitcoin

Several media organizations reported receiving ransom messages tied to the case. Early notes demanded $4 million in Bitcoin with a February 5 deadline.

Later communications raised the demand to $6 million with a final deadline of February 9 at 5:00 p.m. local time.

The messages included a public Bitcoin wallet address for payment.

On February 10, blockchain data showed a small transaction of about 0.0022 BTC, valued near $152. It remains unclear who sent the funds.

The family released a video statement on February 7. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings said, “We received your message and we understand… we will pay.”

They also requested proof of life due to concerns about possible AI-generated hoaxes.

The FBI has confirmed it is leading the investigation. On February 10, agents released doorbell camera footage recovered from residual data.

The footage shows a masked and armed individual outside Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson home at 1:47 a.m. on February 1.

Authorities have increased presence near the residence. Reports indicate FBI and SWAT units have gathered in the area as part of the ongoing operation.

Officials have not confirmed whether these movements relate to specific intelligence.

A 36-year-old man identified as Carlos was detained during a traffic stop in Rio Rico. His residence was searched, but he was later released.

Investigators stated they could not link him to the disappearance.

Public Appeals and Ongoing Investigation

The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information. The reward applies to details leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or the conviction of those responsible.

Officials have urged the public to report credible tips.

Law enforcement has not confirmed direct contact between investigators and the alleged kidnappers.

Authorities continue to examine digital evidence connected to the Bitcoin wallet address. The origin of the recorded transaction remains under review.

The investigation remains active as agencies coordinate efforts. Officials have not released further details about negotiation status or operational plans.

The case continues to draw national attention as developments unfold.

BitGo, a digital asset infrastructure company with more than $100 billion in assets under custody, has received an extension of its license from Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), enabling it to offer crypto services to European investors. The company said its local subsidiary, BitGo Europe, can now provide custody, staking, transfer, and trading services. Institutional clients will also have access to an over-the-counter (OTC) trading desk and multiple liquidity venues. The extension builds on BitGo’s previous Markets-in-Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license, also issued by BaFIN, and adds trading to the existing custody, transfer and staking services. BitGo acquired its initial MiCA license in May 2025, which allowed it to offer certain services to traditional institutions and crypto native companies in the European Union.Read more
