Florida Sheriffs rebel against DeSantis over immigration enforcement

As Gov. Ron DeSantis approaches his last months in office, Florida law enforcement officials are openly rebelling against his aggressive immigration enforcement.

Once his strongest supporters, Republican sheriffs and police chiefs expressed concerns at a State Immigration Enforcement Council meeting about detaining non-criminal unauthorized immigrants. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd noted those "working hard" with families and church involvement shouldn't be targeted.

Naples Police Chief Ciro Dominguez said the enforcement net was "too wide," stating the operation hurts unintended targets.

The backlash extends beyond local law enforcement, with House Republicans acknowledging voter alienation and avoiding "mass deportations" rhetoric ahead of midterms.

DeSantis rejected sheriffs' suggestions for legalization pathways.

Cost pressures mount as the state operates the Everglades detention center at over $1 million daily, while awaiting $608 million in promised federal reimbursement stuck in bureaucratic delays and DHS shutdown complications.
