Another Tuesday, another Wordle to solve. If you’re struggling with today’s Wordle, you’re not alone. This was the trickiest Wordle I’ve had in a long time, and I almost didn’t get the correct answer! That may not be the most reassuring thing to read from your humble Wordle guide, but normally I’m pretty good at this game. Besides, I did get the correct answer in the end. Now I can help get you there as well. Read on for some hints and the answer down below.

How To Solve Today’s Wordle
How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.

Wordle Bot Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score with Wordle Bot right here.
PRICE was a lousy opening guess, leaving me with all grey boxes and 462 words remaining. SALON slashed that to 9, but I fumbled the next few guesses. Instead of MOLDY, Wordle Bot told me I should have guessed DEFOG, and that’s very true. I guess I didn’t realize I had so few words remaining, and didn’t realize how many ended with LLY. At this point I came up with FOLLY, GOLLY, HOLLY, JOLLY, and a few others and guessed FLOGS to weed some out, but it didn’t weed enough. I tried JOLLY next and then, foolish me, thought for sure I only had HOLLY left. If the Wordle had been LOLLY, however, I would have lost this one entirely. It still took me six tries! Yikes!
Competitive Wordle Score

I get -2 for guessing in six and -1 for losing to the Bot. I’m so glad this isn’t 2XP Friday! The Bot gets 1 point for beating me, but loses it for guessing in five. Our new totals for October are:
Erik: 18 points
Wordle Bot: 5 points
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word holly comes from Old English holegn (also spelled holen or holeg), meaning “holly tree.” It likely derives from Proto-Germanic hulinaz or hulinam, related to Old High German hulis and Old Norse hulfr, all referring to holly or similar evergreen shrubs. The deeper root may come from the Proto-Indo-European base kel- or kol- meaning “to prick” or “to stick,” in reference to the plant’s sharp leaves.
