Chad Powers, Glen Powell’s football-based sitcom, wraps up its first season on Tuesday. Will Powell get to play beyond the first six episodes of the Hulu series?
Inspired by football great Eli Manning’s real-life prank on the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2022, Chad Powers kicked off with Episodes 1 and 2 — named 1st Quarter and 2nd Quarter — on Sept. 30. The show, which is the creation of Powell and Michael Waldron (Loki), continued on with 3rd Quarter on Oct. 7 and wraps up its first season with 6th Quarter on Tuesday.
The summary for Chad Powers reads, “Eight years after an unforgivable mistake nukes his promising college football career, hotshot quarterback Russ Holliday (Powell) tries to resurrect his dreams by disguising himself as Chad Powers – a talented oddball who walks on to the struggling South Georgia Catfish.”
Chad Powers, which is produced by Eli Manning and his brother, NFL icon Peyton Manning, also stars Perry Mattfeld, Quentin Plair, Wynn Everett, Francisco Rodriguez and Steve Zahn.
Note: A mild spoiler from the season finale of “Chad Powers” is discussed in the next two paragraphs of this article.
In an interview about the Chad Powers Season 1 finale, Waldon told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday that there is a reason that the season was only six episodes long.
“As much as I love these characters, you can’t do 150 episodes of this premise. Powers will run out of eligibility,” Waldron told THR. “So, the idea was always to go to about the midpoint of the football season. And yes, Glen’s a busy guy, but six episodes felt right to me. Loki was six episodes.”
On top of that, Waldron noted for THR that “doing six episodes felt like an event, which I liked. When you’ve got Glen Powell on television, it makes you accelerate your storytelling in a way that, again and again, I’ve found is a good thing.”
Michael Waldron and Glen Powell Are Game For A ‘Chad Powers’ Season 2
While Chad Powers’ ratings will no doubt come into play when Hulu decides whether it wants to renew the series for a second season, Michael Waldron said he and Glen Powell are definitely game for bring the show back – which an encouraging new for fans who want to see the Top Gun: Maverick and Hit Man star suit up for the college football gridiron again.
Waldron told THR that he and Powell have “certainly talked about it — talked about a plan” to bring Chad Powers back for a second season and that Hulu “has a sense of where we’d like to take it.”
“Ultimately, we have to see how the show performs, but everybody knows Glen and I want to see this thing through to the end,” Waldron told THR. “There’s a lot more story left to tell, so I hope we get to do it.
“When you get to the end of the first season, it feels like we’re just getting started,” Waldron added. “Ricky is now pulled into this alliance and now we can get into our Empire Strikes Back chapter of this trilogy. I hope we get to keep it going.”
All six episodes of Chad Powers Season 1 are streaming on Hulu.
